CIAAD AMBASSADOR, THE BALTIC OFFICE
Gytis Mikalkėnas has been the founder and President of the association “Lietuvos sapropelis” since 2015, and he is also the Co-Board Member and CEO of Sapropel Organics LLC. He promotes sustainable soil use technology across the United States, Western Europe, Africa, and Asia, leveraging his proficiency in four languages to establish international connections.
Over the past 15 years, Gytis has worked with scientists from the University of Latvia and other institutions to develop innovative organic fertilizers. His aim is to advance the mining and processing of naturally occurring sapropel in the Baltic Sea region. Under his leadership, his team has developed products that reshape our understanding of soil resources, addressing specific issues related to soil and plant media. Gytis believes there is no place on Earth that cannot be transformed into a human-friendly green environment.
Growing up in Lithuania, Gytis never felt constrained by borders. During his studies at the Lithuanian University of Agriculture, he completed compulsory military service in remote Siberia. After the collapse of the USSR, he spent three years in Germany, where he worked in commercial settings. He also established a wood processing and trading company with multiple locations in Lithuania and Ukraine, in which he actively participated for eight years. The company’s operations span all of Europe and several Asian countries.
Gytis has a background in football and has been passionate about scuba diving for 25 years. It was during his underwater explorations in the cold lakes of Lithuania that he discovered the untouched natural resource of sapropel, which ultimately led to the development of this industry.
His passion for nature, sustainable products, and the preservation of natural resources, along with his commitment to innovative solutions, drove him to embrace the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. Subsequently, he became an ambassador for the Council for International Accreditation of Architecture & Design (CIAAD).
